An app to prove you are STD free?

So when I first heard about this via Newser, I was a little bit skeptical and had a bit of a “yeah right” moment. But then I spent a bit of my time reading up and it is true, there is an app to prove you are STD free.

The app is called Healthvana and it was developed with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. How it works is that you go for your STD tests and the lab then pushes the results directly to your phone. According to the various reports you can expect results from chlamydia, HIV, syphilis and gonorrhea tests. You’ll also get said results much faster than if you had to wait for your doctor. If your partner or potential partner has the app you can share results with each other.

This is just one step in the right direction towards fighting the HIV battle and the spread of STDs. But there are a few flaws with the app – for starters, I’d be surprised if any labs in South Africa adopt the software into their current operations. We’re rather behind when it comes to implementing technology like this. Also, you or your partner could catch an STD between test results. There’s also the possibility of this sort of personal information falling in to the wrong hands.

Healthvana is available for iOS only at the moment. Would you download it if our local labs were using the software?

I'd love to chat to you some more.
