In order to keep this concise…. yes. You should. Because Playstation VR is pretty damn epic. I was a bit slow to the VR party. Playstation VR launched in South Africa towards the end of January. I only really sank my teeth into it towards the end of February. I was spending a morning at The Nexus (that rad spot I’ve told you about before, filled with various rooms and different games for you to test out while sipping on gourmet milkshakes) with my brother’s girlfriend. We were taken into the Playstation room for a chance to test out the Playstation VR.
The game on was Star Wars Battlefront. By now you know that I have a bit of a soft spot for Star Wars. I’ve played Battlefront and I liked it. It is a beautiful game BUT the exclusive Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission just takes it to a whole new level. You jump in a chair, put the headset on and you’re pulled into this immersive world that lets you look up at AT-AT Walkers as they pass you and explore an X-Wing like never before.
You fly the X-Wing. You’re in the cockpit and dodging asteroids and shooting out. It is incredible. If you take a look behind you your own R2 droid is there and assisting. As you fly past planets you have the ability to actually look out the window and down. You are transported in to game. I haven’t even got started on the actual flying and shooting. VR adds a new element that, I have no doubt, will change the way we play video games.
I’m not sure why I was so slow to the VR train. In 2014 I tested out the Oculus at a dev studio. I had the opportunity to experience a music concert on stage with 360 cameras. You stand on stage and have the opportunity to look around: at the crowd and to the wings. It was pretty epic but not nearly impressive as the Battlefront experience. With that in mind, Battlefront II has also been announced and there will be VR integration announced later in the year. So for Star Wars alone it might be worth the purchase but there is a host of other games as well making it worth the price tag.
With more games releasing with VR capabilities the Playstation VR might be one of those purchases you want to make for the long run. I’m basing my purchase off one game but there are a host of others. The price tag is heavy. You’ll need to drop around 7k on the headset but it will be worth it. Everyone I’ve spoken to who has tested out VR loves it and I have no doubt that it is going to become a staple in any gamer’s home moving forward. So suck up the cost and drop some money. The Playstation VR headset is worth it.
While I save I’m going to spend my time hanging at The Nexus abusing their set up. See you there?
