Cassettes, American Pie & Lion King: let’s take a trip down memory lane

Aladdin has broken box office records, the Lion King is being released and you can buy a cassette player. You’d be forgiven for wondering what year it is because all of these things are happening now. So let’s take a trip down memory lane today. Here’s all the internet news you need to know this week.

Are tapes back?

Yes, I realise that some of you reading this may not even know what a tape is. Back in the day, I remember recording songs from the radio because that is where songs first debuted. You couldn’t buy the CD or CD single yet, so that’s how you listened to a new song. I remember doing this with Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls. Once I had listened to it, I would rewind it and listen to it again and again and again.

bringing cassettes back

If you’d like to take a trip down memory lane, IT’S OK by Ninm Lab, a cassette player is available on Kickstarter for $79 (R977). But it also has a Bluetooth connection so you can use your headphones with it.

As time passes, music has become digitized and everything is convenient. But a cassette tape is still romantic and unforgettable. As a physical object, this box can be held in hands and passed to people of value, which teaches us how to treasure.

American Pie is 20 years old

My BFF and I went to watch this at the movies with her mom. We had no idea it would be what it was. Her mom was laughing out loud and we were sitting there cringing as teenagers. When it finally came out on video, we phoned the video store to book it and because it was school holidays, walked to pick up the video. We were most excited about the Blink 183 cameo. Yes, I am 34 years old

Live-action ERRYTHANG

After the recent Lion King trailer with Timon and Pumba, I am so scared that Disney has actually ruined the Lion King for me. But I will watch it and hopefully will be proved wrong. I, like most kids my age, know the Lion King verbatim. What bothered me the most was that the dialogue had changed!

But the trailers didn’t do Aladdin justice and the actual movie was amazing. You can read a review I did for All4Women here. Aladdin is one of my all-time favourite movies so it had a lot to live up to. But it was amazing and has already hit the $900m mark at the box office.

And now let us plan the next remake. I LOVED Cow and Chicken growing up. Cartoon Network was my second favourite channel, behind MTV. I think a live-action remake would be creepy and funny AF. I wonder how they would do Cousin Boneless?
