WIN a trip to find Tiger cubs with Nokia & Tech Girl!

So a few months ago Nokia launched their Project Come Closer campaign. The idea was that you submitted your favourite photo memory and, if selected, the folks at Nokia would use their fab Lumias to recapture the snap. Yup, they’d recreate the memory and even reunite you with long last friends in the photo. Part of the campaign included a #MediaMemories competition which I (Sam, the editor of this here internet space) won.

Of course, I had no interest in humans but wanted to be reconnected with this little dude:

Armed with a Lumia, I’m off to find my tiger cub and figure the more explorers with me the better! The rad folks at Nokia agree and think you need to come along. Here’s how it is going to work, you and a friend/boyfriend/significant other/sibling/strange person you take along on trips stand the chance to win a weekend away to this gorgeous little piece of heaven:

The Hyatt Regency Oubaai Resort & Spa. Pretty snazzy right?
The Hyatt Regency Oubaai Resort & Spa. Pretty snazzy right?
This is just the view!
This is just the view!

The catch? I’m coming along… and we’re hunting for tigers (there is a host of other fun stuff we’ll be doing as well but at some point we’re all cuddling tiger cubs. Not a bad deal I think!)

Amur+Tiger+Cubs

Entering is easy enough:

You need to be based in South Africa.

You need to be over 18

No gender restrictions. Equal opportunity for all.

You need to comment on this post or write on our Facebook page and tell us why you think you & your partner should come along on the trip with us.

Judging criteria is going to be based on those answers.

We’ll announce a winner on Friday the 13th of June (because it should be a lucky day!)

Once you’ve commented with your answer, tweet the following and your entry is secure:

I want to go searching for tigers with @TechGirlZA @IAmSamW & @NokiaRSA – pick me to win! http://goo.gl/iPEikF

If you don’t have twitter you’ll need to post the above message on the Tech Girl Facebook wall to ensure your entry.

It’s going to be an adventure. I hope you’re ready!

This competition is now closed. Congrats Emma Garson!

  1. Dear Sam,

You should totally pick me. I am rather excellent at taking photos of tigers (I’ll tweet you a picture) and my boyfriend is essentially MacGuyvers long lost cousin (the guy you want with on an adventure that involves technology and the outdoors).

I promise not to wear a safari suit (I will wear a superman T-shirt – superheros are the best tiger hunters).

I have 3 portable chargers for phones – one actually produces enough power to charge a laptop – fantastic for staying connected in tiger hunting land, unless you know a way to extract power from trees. (working on it)

I have never been to George. I did have a toy elephant as a toddler whose name was George. I never had a toy tiger though (why mom, why?) So if I had the chance to play with a baby tiger, it would kind of be the same thing, and my inner toddler can finally be at peace.

My dog Basil, has tiger stripe markings, so I will start to practice hunting him in the garden at home, this way I will be more than adequately prepared for a journey like this.

    Stripes and whiskers.
    Jess

    1. I can’t believe you considered, for a moment, that I was not fully aware who MacGuyver was. Have you seen his hair? Best hair ever! 😛

Rad entry. Though I feel sorry for Basil.

      1. It was a comment for the amateur tiger hunters that are going to try and win, they won’t know about MacGuyver unless they watched the Oros ad.

Basil will be fine. He loves attention.

          1. There was a kid who pretended to be MacGuyver. To get Oros. I need to find it now.

  2. I know I’m not a girl but I love cats which means I also tigers, which means that this trip would blow my mind like a certain person in a certain show that the world is obsessed with, I have no partner but I’m sure I could find an un-serial killer person to join me that would be almost as rad as seeing REAL LIFE TIGERS!

    1. We’re opening this one up to all genders because we’re rad like that 😉

Also I’m liking the un-serial killer person bit. I approve.

  3. Ag NuNu’s man…how cute are those little tiger wigers…? Please pick me to go along on the trip so I can baby talk at those little guys and hug them and squeeze them and loooove them to pieces. So I like totes petted a (sleeping) cheetar (that looks wrong but definitely not spelled cheater coz that’s a whole other story!) once but I’m relutant to tweet it because of indecent cleavage (mine – not the cheetars). So it would be super awesome to have a non porno shot of me feeding a tiger cub that I could actually show off and mention your part in it like ALL THE TIME for eternity. Will you pick me for those Twitter mentions into Eternity. It’s like so valuable it’s like, “for everything else there’s Mastercard”, you know? If you get this ramble we could totes me friends because I’m random like that and we’d have fun on the trip. Kthxbi 🙂 xx

  4. Its Mine…all MINE (actually its all Maddi’s) The child is nearing 8 years old and is mad about animals and when I say animals I mean ALL animals; dogs, cats, horses, birds, fish, snakes, lizards, chickens (she rounds up all the baby chicks at night at the stables and makes sure they are safely tucked in the hok with their moms before we are permitted to go home!) bats, guinea pigs, rabbits, tortoises….except spiders but that could stem from her mom (me) having a major phobia about those suckers..

So going to visit baby tigers would be like going to Disneyland for most kiddiewonks. She will want to take them home but that is a bridge we will cross then.

Would I not be the most awesomest (not a word, I know) mom ever if I won this??? Plus I would die to shmoockle a baby tiger! #justsaying

  5. After ten years of being a TV and radio producer, I was bored and kept wondering “why am I here?”. So I started blogging to keep busy and to rediscover myself.

I know that the little cubs will be a true positive force in this transition that I am going through. I read somewhere that half of the tiger cubs do not make it into adulthood. I was told that I was not going to make it and I am taking a huge risk in quitting my well paying job. Well six months down the line, here I am still breathing and enjoying life better than I thought. And to be honest I am not afraid. I mean what is the worst thing that could happen to me? Heheheheehehe 😉

And because I’m rediscovering myself again, I would like to do this trip as a solo traveler. Huh? I know hey, but when I travel alone I am more eager to meet new people and generally reach out more in order to socialise. And this will give me an opportunity to get to know myself in new and exciting way; and to help me learn about the various opportunities that are in the industry. And yes this could give another “soul” that is really interested in this experience a chance to come along with us and rediscover and mingle with like minded “strangers”. 🙂

Oh and after attending the We are one music festival, I messed up my camera and now it takes blurry pictures. So the Nokia will be great to take pictures with for my travel blog Nickyztravel.blogspot.com. And of course this experience will be featured on my blog.

    You see we all win.

  6. I think this is a hoax and rather a smart and innovative way to find a hot hook-up to go away with for the weekend. For that reason I feel I have failed before I’ve even begun.

However, if it’s for real then…

I believe I should come hunting for tigers because I’ve got the eye of one (I had to). …

On a more serious note, I’ve always loved tiger hunting and have earned my stripes in this department after years of living in concrete jungles where dreams are made of. Speaking of dreaming… After I read the quote “A tiger doesn’t lose sleep over the opinion of sheep, I decided to abandon counting the latter because I don’t care of their opinions and have been sleeping so well ever since.

I’ve narrowed my friend down to one of two people of whom I haven’t decided which one I will pick. One is named Caity (who is a vet and would be helpful if a tiger were to trip or get it’s tooth caught on something) and the other is named Tessa (who would be of no use to us at all but I threw her in as my pro bono deed for the month). We would laugh for days whilst catching tigers and taking amazing photos with awesome tech devices and maybe we will meet three hot men at the hotel bar and end up marrying them?

If you don’t pick me I’m not going to hate you all I’m saying is if I have a birthday party and there’s space for one more person I might not invite you.

    Emma See More

  7. Right so, I obviously need TIGER CUDDLES in my life so pick me and I will bring along my +1, otherwise known as @punkystarfish. Come on… I know you want to spend the weekend with us 😉 xx

  8. Wow this is awesome! I would love to experience Tigers, would love to share this experience with my mum she needs a pick me up treat and what better way an adventure. This would be a great travel adventure to add to my personal blog http://spicegoddess.co.za.Just started getting interested in photography so this would be such a visual treat. And I get to meet you now thats pretty awesome too. Pretty please pick me 🙂 and there will be loads of tweeting if I win. @verushka143

  9. I need a break from this techy world we live in even just for a weekend. Spending time with tigers or admiring that view will be a good break from desks and laptops. Oh and we share the same name – a weekend with two SAMs – I couldn’t think of anything more awesome 🙂

  10. Pandas are really really far away and the next best thing is cuddles from a Tiger also cuddles from my signif. other Fawn (who’s name is an animal, ok we are made for this) and it’s her year and a half anniversary of her lung transplant coming up soon and I would really love to spoil her because she has been through a lot in the last year and a half yet she still manages to keep smiling

  11. Hey there Sam, that place in your head is super awesome. I would love to spend a weekend hunting tigers with you and your friend. It’s so FLUFFY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to bring along a friend that is super special and super inspiring. Fawn Rogers. Fawn is secretly taking over the world one minion at a time. I want to do some kung fu and crunking with tigers in the background. No seriously, I would really love to experience Sam in all her glory reuniting with a long lost buddy. He is absolutely gorgeous. I want to be there taking pictures of the moment and…..well I carry bags really well. The reason I would love to experience this amazing journey with Fawn is that she has recovered from a double lung transplant in 2013 and is living everyday to the fullest. Only a year ago, Fawn was unable to do so many things that we often take for granted. Coupled with an awesome sense of humor and tons of love, this would be an incredible birthday gift for Fawn and I to share as its both our birthdays this month. The other reason you should bpick me is our mutual love for all things geeky and CHOCOLATE!!!!! Unfortunately my pups are not much bigger than large rats so hunting them would be unfair but I have been an Aunty to a Maincoone cat and well they are the tigers of the domestic cats…..It would be an awesome weekend and fear not, if you give a day walker the chance to hunt with you, then I can promise that the wrath of the day walkers will never be upon you!

      1. Done, warmed my Tiger hunting goggles this weekend. Spotted your long lost buddy in Cresta, took a photo of him with my Nokia Lumia phone and tweeted all of you. Not him? No worries, I wont give up! Never fear when a ginger is near, wherever we are, Tigers aren’t far!

          1. Sam, I can ask my App Factory to make us an awesome app that tracks our adventure over the weekend on our super cool Nokia phones…and we can share clues as to where to find the Tigers…never too much technology! Pick me, pick me!

  12. I would love to be able to join you with my partner so we can rediscover nature and search for Tigers. I have always loved nature and from the Nokia Lumia pictures it just make this prize even more irresistible. We would both be appreciative of Nokia if we were chosen to have such an amazing experience and just in time for our 1st Wedding Anniversary ♡. Spreading some love in nature and for nature. Hope to hear from you and Nokia soon

  13. I’ve gotten engaged to the love of my life about a year ago. We have 2 beautiful little girls who take up all of our time. We don’t have much funds, but we have each other. I am sooooooo longing to just spoil her with a lovely vacation so that she can just let her hair down a bit and relax. She works every single day, including w.ends and public holidays. I work during the work, so w.ends and public holidays and just me and the kids. This opportunity would be a chance of a lifetime for the both of us to just rekindle the love/get that flame burning again, wouldn’t you agree? The setting, the majestic presence of tigers, a lady who is as tech savvy as what I am and my beautiful fiance’. Shu shu shu, getting goosebumps just typing this.

  14. I really want to tag along since me and my lifetime are going through some tough time I think this might just make us bond enough and make things work cause of the distance so such a trip is a must and I’ll keep my fingers crossed and pray

  15. Well what can I say, besides I love tigers, I am a loyal Nokia user (at the moment my screen is cracked so not using it) and finally with 2 kids and both of us working I really feel that I need to take my beautiful girlfriend away for a “special” trip. She is so deserving of it wonderful mother, trusted friend and amazing partner. I don’t want to win it for me, it’s more for here. Amazing prize

  16. This is such an amazing prize. You should totally pick me and here’s why. The fiance and I are getting married this year so money is very tight. We’ve cut down on lots of things like week-end outings, eating out and even birthday gifts :-(. I’d love to be able to surprise him with this amazing retreat to make up for the luxuries we’ve been unable to afford lately. And you know, getaways only make a couple’s bond stronger.

What’s more is that he loves Nokia Lumia so much that he’s getting a backup Nokia Lumia phone – only God knows what for when his device works perfectly and my phone gets jealous of the amazing pics that his Nokia Lumia takes. How’s this for a reward for loyalty? 😉

Oh and he loves the outdoors and animals. And I want to play with little baby tigers too.

  17. My journey into mobile usage started with Nokia (oh how I thought I was cool with my 3210!), we were best friends throughout my teen years. Then the world of BBM swayed me from the Nokia way, but alas, my phone and camera on this black device have kept me wanting to get back to my roots and move away from this now ancient piece of technology I hold in my hands… back to something more solid, trustworthy and never let me down.

The world of possibilities I could experience with a Nokia Lumia are bright, and an adventure like this with you would be something not only worth capturing on camera to hold onto in picture for years to come, but will also give me the opportunity to break out from reality for just a little bit. To experience something that isn’t the norm, that let’s me reach out and…not “touch faith” like as in the Depeche Mode song, but embrace nature and capture true beauty in the faces of those incredibleTigers.

I have found my personal writing voice again after many years, and would love to be able to capture this experience both on camera and on digital pen and paper!

Oh, and I can also try entice you to pick me with my good collection of music, as well as my charming, witty personality, that I can bring along with me on the trip! 🙂

  18. Ok,so I know I’ve already entered with Justine as my +1 but now I’m entering again with Sasha because YOLO. Sash aka @FaceValue_za is one of my newest friends but our souls go way back! In the short time that I’ve known her she has brought so much love and sparkles into my life! As she has already said, our birthdays are 4 days apart and I would love to take her on a tiger adventure!! For my birthday Sash bought me the most beautiful tiger charm necklace so now we kinda have to win else the necklace won’t make sense 😉

    1. Holding thumbs that the secret really works here……..putting the good vibes out there and hopefully we can cuddle Tigers with Sam soon. I hear Sam rocks at cocktail drinking too #JustSaying This gal got moves! Ps, Fawny, send us pics of you wearing the Tiger necklace!

  19. Tech Girl, Sam and Nokia SA, I do not believe that there are enough words in the human (and Tiger) language, or even proper physical expressions capable of adequately summing up the epicness of this once in a lifetime opportunity! My wife and I would not only be completely honored to be included in this journey into timeless adventure, but would totally be the ideal counterparts to wrap up this experience in a gloriously energetic, side-splittingly humorous and legend-making little bow. My wife and I have never been on an adventure of such magnitudinous significance, let alone a holiday since we met in 2009, and the absolute pinnacle or ultimate adventure for the both of us is when I’m healing Amy while she commands her Nether-void Minion to slay stone giants, or when the both of us scaling snow-capped mountains fiercely guarded by fire-breathing dragons…in World of Warcraft. We quite literally just finished a few quests in Pandaria where we had to go rescue a few Tiger Cubs from the clutches of some bandits (no jokes), so I take that as a sign that it is time for us to step out of our digital adventures, and watch them manifest in real life. As an added incentive, I vow to document the entire trip with my HD video camera and once we return, to compile all the footage into a “reality-tv documentary” episode. To the point now: Pick me. Pick Us. We want to win a trip to find tigers with Tech Girl, Sam and Nokia SA.

  20. A Game of Tigers (A short story on the way to the airport to go and find tigers)

I wake up to a bowl of Frosties with my pal, Tony the Tiger (he’s grrrrreat). I listen to the Eye of the Tiger while I get dressed and put on my Onitsuka Tiger sneakers.

I catch the highlights of last night’s golf with Tiger Woods, switch over to watch some cartoons with Tigger and Pooh instead and catch the latest adventures of Calvin and Hobbes (Hobbes is the best).

On the way to the airport I remember when Panjo the Tiger broke out of the zoo and feel relieved to know that it wasn’t a more violent tiger like Shere Kahn (that dude was whack).

Of course you chose me as the winner of the competition, I think to myself, I’ve already found eight tigers in this story before I even arrived at the airport!

PS It’s a good thing that we’re flying down to George instead of using a boat, I wouldn’t want to get shipwrecked with Richard Parker (besides, ‘Life of Dave’ isn’t that catchy a movie title).

PPS That makes nine tigers #JustSaying

  21. No one is more qualified to cuddle tiger cubs than me. Momma Lionheart here, reporting for behind-the-ear tickles, fluffy belly rubs and wet nose kisses! Just don’t tell my three cubs back home that I’m cheating on them. To sweeten the deal, I am offering to write down my secret recipe for the perfect cosmopolitan cocktail with a twist. It’s so good it makes your eyes squeeze shut with sweet deliciousness every time you take a sip.

  22. OMG, I super really would love to win this … did you know that Tigers are the last animal on the World Wildlife Fund Endangered List that I need to get up close and see! This sounds perfect to help me reach that goal. Holding thumbs and crossing fingers. Big. Time.
