A 360 degree view with this indoor security camera

The Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Camera review

As someone who purchased her own home a few months ago, I’ve had a revived interest in home appliances and tech. I wanted to test out the Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Camera and thought I’d share some thoughts on my experience with the device as not only a security option but also a great way to keep an eye on (and communicate) with people in the home while you’re out:

We recently purchased our own home and it FINALLY means I no longer have to consider whether a specific gadget can be a permanent fixture or not. When you’re renting, the idea of running cables or nailing things into a wall is not one you entertain. Rather you’re looking for solutions which can easily be removed when you move. The Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Camera is great because it can happily stand on a table in the corner, unobtrusively, if you’re renting. However, for me? I’m most excited about the mount it arrives in the box with – because I can now ensure it is mounted in a corner and gives me the best possible view.

In this blog I’ve NOT shown pictures of the camera set up or where we chose to mount it. I’ve also tried to show minimal imagery of my home. It is a security camera, and I think it defeats the purpose sharing more than the bare minimum with you in this regard. But I hope you get enough of a feel to see the pros of the device!

So much coverage

The benefits of this specific security camera are in the name: it can tilt 169 degrees and pan 360 degrees. Once you’ve downloaded the Ring app you can adjust the angle to your needs. It’s such a great set up.  We also found that while it is an indoor camera, because of the pan and tilt functionality we could set it up near a window – allowing us a full view of the area inside and some focus on our garden outside without having to place the camera there. Obviously this is dependent on the location and size of your window, but great plus!

The communication benefits

If you’re here, you might not know (but should) that I travel like A LOT for work. In 2024 I was gone for most of the year working overseas. We set up the Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Camera in late December and my absolute favourite thing to do would be to log in to the app to see my dogs playing outside OR my significant other would let me know when he was cooking dinner and I’d log in. Why? Because you get a full 360 degree view of what is going and can happily watch and chat through the camera. The two way talk offering is superb. You can see, hear and speak with live audio and video. I was logging in via the Ring App from Europe and the feed (at night) was clear for both of us. It was actually a huge upgrade on WhatsApp video calling. It also meant I could “feel” like I was seated at the kitchen counter and my partner didn’t need to worry about trying to stay in frame. The dogs didn’t seem to be bothered either way.

Motion Alerts

You can set up the camera to notify you when it senses movement. You’ll get the notification on your phone. This one was really helpful for us as we were able to see when our naughty puppy was jumping on the furniture. You can also go back and watch if you miss it in real time. You can also customise this for specific spots in the coverage area so you’re not getting notified when, for example, your TV turns on. It’s really rather impressive how much you can do with the camera and inside the app.

Overall we are really impressed with this device and the mount that comes in the box can be easily installed in a wall or high up as a permanent feature. The camera does connect via USB which is a headache as you’ll need a plug adapter to accommodate that – something to keep in mind. I’m a big fan. I’ve also not used the Ring brand in a long time, returning to this manufacturer I’ve been impressed – so much so that I’m now wanting to test out their video doorbell. I didn’t know that was something I needed until I used the Pan-Tilt Camera and started looking in to the other options they have available.

That will be my next Ring purchase for sure!
