I’ve used a ghd styler for around 10 years now. I once tried another styler that I purchased for cheap from Thailand but it was crap and I had to run it over my hair about a trillion times before it finally went straight (and keep in mind I have naturally limp and boring hair).
ghd Stylers are pricey but they work. They also last (and you can make them last longer by using our top tech tips). There’s a reason for that though. Like any gadget or technological innovation ghd has employed science to make their product better. Did you know they have a research and development lab at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom? It’s here that they developed their latest hair styler – the ghd Platinum.
I got a chance to sit down with Andrew Young, ghd South Africa’s key account and education manager. He spoke me through some of the innovation behind the ghd Platinum and also let me try it out for myself to prove that the claims they’re making are the truth.
Let’s get Science like for awhile. The big “innovation” in the ghd Platinum is the Trizone Technology it employs. Minus the tech talk what this means is that those plates on the styler have 3 sensors (6 actually, two in three spots)- one in the front, one in the middle and one at the back. The plates regulate the temperature of the styler at a cool 185 degrees centigrade. So your hair won’t be heated more than that optimal temperature, the sensors regulate accordingly.
According to the Scientists at Cambridge University, this is the proven optimal temperature for styling hair. Your hair is a bit like glass, so it starts off pretty strong and as you heat it up it becomes malleable, of course, a bit like glass, if you heat it too much it ends up in one hot mess and that is where you actually break and damage your hair. By regulating at the optimal temperature of 185 degrees the ghd Platinum reduces hair breakage by up to 50% (that’s a Scientifically proven fact not just the usual marketing BS we’ve become used to).
Young tossed out a few more things to come out of that research lab ghd has set up. The ghd Platinum offers up 20% more shine to your hair and is also twice more likely to retain your hair colour than competitors. Remember that hot mess I mentioned earlier? Well, when you’re over heating your hair you’re also breaking down the colour.
The ghd Platinum offers up a few more tech add ons to help you along: It has universal voltage and automatically switches off after 30 minutes if you aren’t using it. The new design also brags a Wishbone hinge which means you can’t over grip your hair when styling. Young’s top tip is to remember that the heat styles your hair, not the pressure! The swivel cord also makes it easier to style your hair. This was especially interesting to me because I can’t do a ghd curl no matter how hard I try (and I’ve watched that Suzelle DIY video A MILLION times) but it is far easier with the new design and I was able to turn the styler in my hair and get a curl. If I can do it anyone can.
The ghd Platinum is going to set you back a cool R2899.00 at ghdhair.com which may make you choke on your tea. But you’re paying for the innovation and the two year warranty you get with the hair styler (if there is a problem they replace the styler not repair it which is something to keep in mind).
Do you own a ghd Styler? Would you buy the ghd Platinum?
Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post… Though Andrew Young did help curl my hair for me. I still own my ghd and just purchased a ghd curling tool. Review soon!
