Do you need a portable router? I didn’t think I did… until ASUS asked me to do some content around the portable router they offer. I have a content agreement with ASUS specifically around their PC components, monitors and routers. They always ask me to try the item first, get my thoughts and then we determine if I’m open to creating the content. Even with my misgivings about the router, I agreed to take it on my most recent work trip. I was pleasantly surprised by the router and now think everyone who spends a lot of time on public Wi-Fi should consider one.
I know it probably seems like an addition piece of tech you need to add to your luggage, which is always somewhat off putting. But it is around the same size as my Kindle and somewhat lighter. Set up is simple as it works well the ASUS Router app I already have set up (as I use a mesh system at home). The big selling point for me was the fact that the portable router can work as an extra node for the mesh system when I’m at home and not travelling. Thus giving is more purpose versus just sitting in a bag when I’m not travelling. I’ve summarised my thoughts on the router in this short format Instagram reel, which should help if you’re curious about the offering:

I think the one thing that I didn’t mention in the reel which I could bring up now is the need to have it plugged in to use. Standard, obviously, but the cable is definitely the headache when you’re travelling. I think a battery option might be beneficial but I imagine that might not work. All in all though, not a bad piece of tech.
