Years ago I put together a list of South African box subscriptions. They were all the rage for awhile – you paid a certain amount and received a mystery box each month filled with various goodies. I’ve been meaning to re-do the list for ages but haven’t had time to fully review what is currently available (so if you know of rad subscription box services let me know). However, what I have been paying attention to lately is gift box subscriptions, because I’m trying to find new and fun ideas for birthdays and pressies for friends. Turns out South Africa has a host of Gift Box Subscriptions available and I thought I’d share a few of my favourite finds with you.
Full disclosure I haven’t ordered any of these yet, I just saw them and thought they looked rather interesting. Thus the share!
The Luxe Box
The Luxe Box is the first one of my list because I like that you can fully customise your box. The service allows you to order a gift box and then select items for the box that suit your budget and specific requirements. One of my biggest concerns with gift box subscriptions is that the items inside the box might not always all be useful to the person receiving them. The Luxe Box takes care of that. You begin by choosing the size of the box you wish to buy, either small or large. You’re then able to add a variety of items in various categories which include accessories like earrings, a card, beauty products, confectionery items such as Gin or chocolate, home items and personalised items. The cost is determined by you and want you want to add to your box. However, if you choose a small box at R100 and added the cheapest item from each category you’d spend roughly R573 not including shipping. Again, you determine what you have to spend so you can mix and match accordingly. The items available to add to the box are all lovely locally produced products and there is a big enough selection to impress even the fussiest friend! You can find out more by clicking here.
Watch Me Whip Macaron Box
Each month Watch Me Whip does a mixed Macaron Box special over on their Instagram page. The boxes are available on the first weekend of each month. You get a box of 8 macarons for R90 as opposed to the usual price of R144. The flavours in the blox include Vanilla bean, Milo, Salted Caramel and Oreo. If you order 1 box you’ll need to arrange collection but if you order two or more boxes there is a free delivery option for Johannesburg and surrounding areas. This is a great surprise gift and available each month. You need to head on over to the Instagram page to take advantage of the gift box.
Little Black Bag
Little Black Bag is a monthly box/bag subscription that can also be sent as a gift box subscription if you want. One box costs R249 or you can subscribe for a 3 month delivery which costs R697. The price includes shipping. Each bag can include a personalised message. The bags feature a variety of products including home, decor, beauty, fashion and food items. Every month has a specific theme so you’re never sure what you are going to get. I think a big plus for me with Little Black Bag is that the items are all full sized, so you’re not paying for a bunch of sample products. The Little Black Bags are shipped on the 15th of the month and arrive on the 25th. For a feel of what has been featured in previous bags take a little look here.
That’s my selection for now. If you know of other gift box subscription services that should be added to the list, let me know in the comments below!
