The Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G smartphone will be released soon in South Africa. I got my hands on the phone and had a chance to put it through its paces to see what all the fuss was about. The Redmi Note 10 5G that I used came in a gorgeous Nighttime Blue with 4GB RAM and 128GB ROM. The Android smartphone has a 90Hz 6.5″ Dot Display with 360-degree ambient sensor and a 5000mAh fast charging battery. The phone also has a 48MP triple camera with macro and depth lenses. It retails locally for R4 499. I filmed an unboxing so you could take a look at the phone as it came out the box:
Let’s talk about chips!
Not delicious potato chips that make for lazy Saturdays, but rather phone chips! I think for many smartphone users we don’t necessarily appreciate how important the chipset in your phone is. The chip in your phone is an entire system and ultimately is the brain that makes that little device in your hand perform. It handles your operating system and makes sure when you hit a button on your phone you get the necessary reaction (like capturing a photo!).
The Redmi Note 10 5G smartphone utilises the MediaTek Dimensity 700. So, what does this mean? It means you get a lot of rad features in the phone without having to sell a kidney or donate your arm. Take a look:
Affordable 5G? What?!
The big thing that the MediaTek Dimensity 700 brings to the Redmi Note 10 5G is actually in the name. It’s the 5G connectivity option. Obviously, this is going to be dependent on if your operator has the necessary 5G capabilities, but as more South African telecommunications companies roll out 5G infrastructure having that device capability is a big plus. So, what is 5G? 5G is a technology standard for broadband cellular networks and offers up a few things, including low latency, faster download speeds and the option for more connectivity. Using 5G is going to let you do a lot more from your phone.
The Redmi Note 10 5G is one of the most affordable 5G smartphones in the country, meaning you can get the benefits of the technology without, once again, having to blow a small fortune on your device. The MediaTek Dimensity 700 also offers up a Dual 5G SIM system as well as an integrated modem which is going to supply top level power-efficiency.
Championing accessibility
Whenever I’m on a panel to talk about gaming or technology in Southern Africa, the conversation around accessibility comes up. Premium devices that offer up many of the features I’ve discussed above cost way too much and are out of reach for the majority of us who need to keep the cost of our device low while still not wanting to lose out on being able to move into the future with the various features rolling out on smartphones. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G smartphone finds a way to bridge the gap, ensuring you get a device that can give you everything you need to stay ahead of the curve while still coming in at an affordable price point.
Definitely consider it if you’re looking for a new smartphone with an Android operating system.
