I originally saw this story on Business Insider and I thought it was too damn good not to share.

CodeMakers is a non-profit organisation that focuses on Science Education and was founded by Justin Yarrow. Yarrow has teamed up with a bunch of illustrators to create a series of trading cards that feature 48 South African scientists. The collection is called SuperScientists.

Each of the cards features South African Scientists doing rad things and includes the information you’d expect on trading cards like the research they’re doing, their age and awards. When you think about it, we don’t usually mention local Scientists when highlighting examples of those doing awesome things in scientific fields.

Yarrow told Business Insider that the project is meant to highlight these real life superheroes and also showcasing the demographics of South Africa:

“Kids love to see a picture and know their hero is a person who worked down the road or is from a community from the town that they grew up in.”

Take a look at an example of the cards:

Illustrator Curtis Bonhomme worked on the project and four new Super Hero Scientists have been added by Clyde Beech, who is the co-developer of Kwezi Comics.

The cards and some fun posters are available on the SuperScientists website. Definitely go check them out!
