While I haven’t spawned a small human, when I saw this I decided it would be a goodie to share because it is rather rad. I kind of wish stuff like this was around when I was a youngster. As of this weekend and for the rest of July iStore has partnered with Think Ahead to offer free coding classes to kids around South Africa. Kids from 6 to 12 years old and those 13 and older can go to 11 different iStores on a Saturday to join in on a free coding session.
The sessions run on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th of July. They also cater for various levels from beginner coders to more advanced kids. For those newer to coding they’ll learn a bit about Swift (Apple’s coding language) and learn to write functions and run loops. Those a bit more advanced will get to use their coding skills to code games like Brick Breaker and Battleship. For the older more advanced kids they’ll be taught how to write algorithms to assist them with escaping mazes.
Where?
The free coding classes for kids will be held at various iStores around the country. You do need to register beforehand. So make sure you head on over to this page to do that.
The coding sessions are to celebrate Mandela Day which ties into the theme this year of “Take Action. Inspire Change. Make every day a Mandela Day.” I think it is a really nice opportunity for kids to learn a useful skill and have some fun while doing it. So I thought I’d share.
If you take your kids let me know how they found the workshops? Would love to hear the feedback on this clever idea.
