Who wants to win a rad Ready Player One hamper?

The problem with being in the Ukraine is that I cannot get my movie fix. Movies here are dubbed and there are no English sub titles, so for 5 weeks I’ve had to give up watching new releases. When I received an invite to the prescreening of Ready Player One I basically sobbed myself to sleep because I couldn’t attend (slight exaggeration but you get my drift). So I did the next best thing and sent my brother! He penned some thoughts for me about the movie in the best no spoiler sense. This is what he had to say:

Trailers are tricky things. Sometimes you can derive an entire story from a single one, sometimes the best jokes are used and other times the trailer leaves you wanting more. For me, Ready Player One’s trailer did the latter for me. So I had to see it.

Ready Player One finds a host of every conceivable pop culture reference and makes it. There’s an easter egg in every scene. If you grew up playing Mario, watching movies, reading comics or owning noobs in a FPS – you should watch this film. Actually, book to watch it twice because you’ll likely need to re-watch it to catch all the surprises, but it would be well worth it. The movie is out in cinemas on 29 March. It isn’t an identical homage to the novel but the little things about each scene will make it worth the watch. Yes, some characters are easily forgotten and the storyline isn’t as strong as the book BUT the pop culture references will make you want to visit the OASIS again and again.

I spoke to him as he left the cinema and while he wasn’t 100% sold on the writing he was in love with the easter eggs he mentioned above and told me I needed to go see it. So I will, on my return. I think the folks at Warner Bros. were feeling my fomo because they’ve offered me something to make up for me having to miss the release of this movie:

Okay, now to the winning part. To get your hands on one of these 3 hampers all you need to do is the following:

  1. Comment on this blog post telling me what your favourite video game of all time is and why
  2. Send out a tweet, Instagram pic or post on the Tech Girl Facebook page wall sharing your READY PLAYER ONE moment (be as creative with that as you want 😉 ). The social post needs to include @TechGirlZA or tag me in it so I can see. You’ll also need to use the hashtag #ReadyPlayerOneZA

So basically one blog comment and a social media post. You can choose your preferred platform. I’ll choose my 3 favourites on Tuesday 3 April. So you have until then to enter.

Let’s celebrate our love of geek and gaming. Please be aware that this competition is only open to individuals currently residing in South Africa.

  1. Favorite, game of all time is a hard one, but I still love playing it, Diablo 3, been a Blizzard fan since High school, with the original Warcraft game, but Diablo has always carried a special place in my heart.

    1. Actually keen to give Diablo 3 a go at some point. Blizzard are so freaking epic at making incredible games though. They really do a good job with every title.

  2. Favorite game of all time is the Kingdom Hearts series. The blend of my favorite Square Enix and Disney franchises is just pure AWESOMESAUCE!

  3. my most favourite game if all time would be Players Unknown Battleground, because it gets my blood pumping and makes me feel super involved in the game, the suspense or not knowing where people are. the fact that you have 1 life per round. makes you work to survive.

  4. My favourite game of all time would have to be Islander, yes im giving my age up but it was my favorite childhood game and I loved the different levels, the changing scenes and just the fun of it lol ! I just love old school games like Mortal Combat, Contra and even Age of Empires….I do enjoy Need for speed aswell…These games have a way of staying in your heart forever 🙂

  5. To name a favourite is difficult. I think for any gamer to have a solid favourite always leaves a few others pining in the back of your memory. For me, each game took me to new dimensions and back with glorious story lines and epic fight scenes or just all round a highly entertaining, personality changing experience in the long run.

My favourite though would probably the Witcher series, The Witcher 3 specifically. The gorgeous graphics, immense and truly thrilling story line (its choice based system is pretty legit) and the memorable characters are just to die for. To have an open world map with beastly monsters prowling around that could knock you clean from your safe place… it’s just really good. The fact that they then released 2 more amazing expansions with matching Gwent playing decks was just teh cherry on top. I think it got bad to a point I convinced my girlfriend to buy it for playstation and got her hooked too ;D Sharing the experience… huge plus.

Too stoked to see the release of Ready Player One!

  8. My favorite game of all time: hmm what a tricky question. I was first introduced to gaming by a family friend. He loved shooter games such as Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake etc. From there on I was completely hooked. We did not have internet so i actually ended up completing the campaigns of Warcraft 1-3, C&C, Red Alert etc multiple times.. Boring i know.

In 2010 i finally got internet and was introduced to dota and dota2. Long story short i had the privilege of competing at Rage 2013 and 2014. Dota2 has to be my choice right? And I’m OK with that. The game has an amazing reach. You get exposed to so many different types of people. Its ever evolving with the meta changing constantly. The esports scene is also one of the most exciting with various storylines and rivalries being created along the path. The game itself is amazing. Every game is different even though it is essentially the same. You can play a certain hero in so many ways. The skillcap is quite high, which makes it challenging as well.

Here’s to hoping it never becomes a “daed gmae”.

    Cheers

      1. Yes! We used to play against each other a few times. Very decent player. Send my regards!

  9. my most favourite game if all time would be Players Unknown Battleground, because it gets my blood pumping and makes me feel super involved in the game, the suspense or not knowing where people are. the fact that you have 1 life per round. makes you work to survive.

  11. Need for Speed series has been my favourite and most of my childhood and adult life has spent playing that game. I still play it on my PS4 as the new versions gets launched. Why because of driving the cars which i can’t afford in the real life and the tracks which i have not seen ever in my life. Thanks

  12. Ok I’m so giving away my age here, but for me I’ll say Duke Nukem. It was this pc game that got me addicted to games. I remember learning the cheat for it which gave me hours of endless game play.

Now my nephew is a game addict and this prize will be amaing for his upcoming birthday. You see he lugs his PS4 around is a soft back pack when he visits his favorite aunty and we stay up till late playing. My hub is scared to upgrade my PS3 cause i might end up spending too much time online. ?

So ya make me the worlds best aunt. ?

  13. My favourite game? I’d have to say Crysis. Yes the original Crysis that spawned the meme and that no PC could run, ever. It started with an MSI ATI RX1550 around 12 years ago. It was the very first GPU that I had ever bought using my own money, but I was proud. It was cheap… very cheap, but it was all I had. It could however run Crysis… not fast but it could! At the time Crysis had just released along with Far Cry 2. So I played Crysis. We played it at 12-16fps and I loved every moment of it! Now here I sit with over 290 games in my Steam library, but I still get that urge to fire up good old Crysis and give it a play through!?

  16. I’m a child of the 80’s, so I would firstly go with the Mario games. We also played A LOT of SEGA games, and of course Duke Nukem, Castle Wolfenstine and Wolf 3D. But my best was probably Donkey Kong ! So to all the other peeps out there that thinks they might have a chance to win over me, I’ll leave you with a quote from Despicable Me 3:”It’s on like Donkey Kong!”

  19. Although I think I was almost swayed quite recently, Bioshock has been my favourite game franchise for years. They put so much into the concept as well as the art of storytelling, every poster/sign/artwork is related to the world the game plays off in. I respect that they had so much pride for what they were working on that they didn’t settle – they knew when a game is explored and over it’s done, and by adding so many little accents all over they are giving you as much as possible from that world to experience.

  20. Wow this is tough!

Game that got me addicted to gaming and has kept me playing till today has to be Counter Strike. Cliche I know… But as much as I have tried, I can’t walk away from it.

  21. Def Starcraft and Starcraft Brood War – These were my first PC games and have loved them since. My uncle let me play it on his computer when we would visit, so naturally these were the first games we bought for our home PC.

I was really pulled into the story, the graphics were awesome (as old as the games was) and getting to learn the strategy behind each race was fascinating. The characters each had great personalities and loved the fact that they would get annoyed if you repeatedly clicked on them.

Also, you could literally use mind control on your opponents! If I had that kind of power, I’d pay for one Mc Donald’s burger and make them pack two …. evil laugh!

  25. My favourite game off all time was the original Knights of the old Republic. It was my first role playing game and i was hooked. I had always heard of people playing games until all hours of the morning and this is the first time i experienced it(also first time i ever finished a game).

  26. OOOOOOOOOOO people! Took me a few days to think it through … but seeing that no one is mentioning the game that destroyed friendships, relationships and should be used by psychologists to test anger issues … TEKKEN!! Now that I am a single mom gamer with a gaming teen daughter, we have decided to take our relationship to the next level with Tekken 7 on Playstation 4 … luckily I have a dog if things go really ape …

    1. “Destroyed friendships”. Aint that the truth! I’m obsessed with the Panda in Tekken 7 hahaha. Don’t alienate your daughter with this one 😉

  31. Favourite game of all time has to be Half Life. Teenage Richard loved every minute of the story, especially the assault by the military!

  32. I think my best game of all time has to Rachet and Clank Nexus. My daughter and I play it all the time. She is only 7 and loves how the game interacts and funny quirks and phrases. I’ve always like the Rachet and Clank series, and I can’t wait for the next installment.

  33. While my instinctive answer would be Assassin’s Creed, my favourite game of all time would have to be MediEvil Resurrection. It was the first game I played that introduced me to the action-adventure genre and future genres that I originally wouldn’t have dreamed of playing. It had a fantastic story, created plenty of laughs for me; and the fact that Tom Baker was the voice of the Grim Reaper was brilliant too ;p

    1. Hey Lauren. You’re a winner! Congrats. I’ve got your email so will send through what I need from you to get your prize to you. Congrats!

  39. I looooove problem solving games like Mahjong, Sudoku and so on, my sons say I am boring, I believe it keeps my mind busy with solving problems, which makes it easier for me to do problem solving in real life. The 2 of them prefer playing LOL online, always saying to me when I call them, “I can’t now mom, I’m in a game” – pure frustration. the only problem I cannot solve. haha
