I usually avoid “newsy” pieces but this one got me really excited! The Explore Data Science Academy opened a few weeks ago. It is the first data science training academy in SA. Big Data Analytics is big business globally (I once had a joke about taking a shot every time someone said big data at a press event. Thankfully I never followed through as I’d likely need a new liver by now). Big Data Analytics is a growing career option for those looking to enter the STEM world (that’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths if you weren’t sure). BCX are the financial support behind this. They’ve put more than R50 million into the Academy. WOWSA!

Okay, Let’s get to those internships.
BCX committed to sponsoring 300 interns over the next 3 years at the Explore Data Science Academy. Individuals with skill and understanding of Data Science are pretty scarce locally so the academy will attempt to correct this and also include additional courses for further development of those already in the field. BCX will offer 100 free internships to successful applicants of the Academy’s one year accredited skills data science programme.
The internships are fully sponsored and the programme kicks off in January next year.
How do you apply?
The process is extremely easy. There are no restrictions on this one. You don’t need a formal qualification. Age isn’t going to be a big factor either. You’ll need to be between the ages of 17 and 35 years old. So anyone can apply! You will have to pass an aptitude test on the Academy website though. So keep that in mind. The Academy is also open to people with no previous experience or qualifications. You’ll need to show an aptitude for Data Science but that will be enough to potentially get you in. Which is so rad.
