What am I? I’m a Gamer. It’s a label that I’m proud of, one that I wear like my favorite hoodie.
But I’m not just a gamer, no, I’m a Girl Gamer; and yes I know that’s not something that you’re supposed to say out loud, but who cares, it’s what I am and it’s not a bad label to have. As a Girl Gamer, nothing makes me happier than getting the chance to play through a game as a woman. Now I’m not saying that I only want to play female characters, just that I appreciate it when I can.
Join me as I take a look at 5 upcoming games (in no particular order) with woman leads who will make you proud to be (or play) one of these diverse, brave, bad-ass, formidable forces of nature:
Mass Effect: Andromeda
Mass Effect: Andromeda is an upcoming action role-playing game. It’s the fourth Mass Effect game. The game is set within the Milky Way Galaxy during the 22nd century, where humanity is planning to populate new home worlds in the Andromeda Galaxy as part of a strategy called the Andromeda Initiative. Unlike the previous titles where you play as Scott Ryder, you are now given the choice to play as either Ryder twin, Scott or Sara.
Both Ryder twins are Alliance recruits who remain a part of the game’s plot even if they are not selected as the main character.
HellBlade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is an upcoming, action hack-and-slash role-playing game. It takes you on a journey into savage Viking lands as Senua, a powerful Celtic warrior. The story is based heavily on Celtic mythology, the story focusing on Senua’s point of view, as she embarks on a personal journey through a dark, twisted underworld made up of the psychotic manifestations of her own mind.
Prey is an upcoming first-person shooter video game. You take on the role of Morgan Yu, a human aboard a space station overrun with hostile aliens trying to survive. When you start playing you get to decide Morgan’s gender and decisions made by you, including gender, will influence elements of the game’s story.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn is an upcoming action role-playing video game. The plot revolves around Aloy, a hunter, and archer who lives in a world overrun by robots. Having been kept away from the rest of the world for her whole life, she sets out to discover the dangers that kept her sheltered for so long.
Little Nightmares is an upcoming puzzle-platformer. You take on the role of a nine-year-old girl named Six. She is kidnapped from her home and taken to work in The Maw, a surreal resort catering to the whims of the powerful elite. When she gets a chance at freedom, Six takes a journey through the bizarre and unpredictable world of The Maw to get her freedom, and you go along on this dark, twisted ride.
And then, how could I possibly talk about upcoming games with badass female and forget to mention Ellie from Last Of Us 2?
Every single year that passes I get to see more and more woman represented in video games, and not just as mindless background noise either, but as full, dynamic character leads.
It’s something that makes me smile to see and makes me proud to wear my Girl Gamer label.
I usually send out a weekly mailer with a recap of blog posts but also some personal anecdotes. If you want to know about competitions or just catch up in a more personal setting then you might like to receive the mailer.
