Virtual Reality is all the rage and is going to only get bigger come 2016. Everyone and their mom is launching fancy VR headsets and my predication is that very soon we’re going to see a lot of content for VR only. However, VR headsets cost a pretty penny and not all of us can justify that splurge.
Is there an affordable VR headset?
Google Cardboard was the first to market with a somewhat simple VR headset that allowed you to view 3D videos off your smartphone. Local restaurant, Spur Steak Ranches, has taken it a step further and released their limited Spur Goggles. These are such a cute extra with your dinner and your kids will go bonkers for them. It is a great way to introduce them to the world of VR without having to break the bank (or spend a little under R300 for them).
Spur Goggles
The Spur Goggles have plastic lens and use your smartphone to offer up 3D videos and 360 degree viewing. They work on the following phone models:
- Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, S6, S7 or Nexus
- Apple: iPhone 5, 5s, 6 or 6s
- Google: Nexus 4 or 5
- Lenovo/Motorola: Moto X
The goggles cost R20 when you purchase a Spur meal. However, there is a catch. There are only 100 000 goggles available… so best you go get your hands on some ribs! There are a stack of videos online that you can watch with your goggles and we have a host if you click our Google Cardboard link above. Alternatively, the SpurSecret Tribe website has also found some family-friendly virtual reality videos for you to download if you visit their website.
I know these are meant for kids but they really are tons of fun for adults too. I’ve been having the best time with them. My favourite is to watch 360 degree music concerts from the stage. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
Disclosure: Spur sent me a pair of their Spur Goggles to try out.
