#GirlBoss – how to be successful as a woman in business

If you feel stuck in a career rut, want to make more money, increase your confidence, find your passion or improve your business skills, then #GirlBoss is the book for you. Here’s how to be successful as a woman in business.

#GirlBoss author, Sophia Amoruso is richer than Beyonce and is one of the richest self-made women in the world

At 22, Sophia Amoruso had opened Nasty Girl Vintage on eBay, an online store that sold vintage clothes. The first thing she sold was actually a book she had stolen as a teenager!

After being banned from eBay, she opened up her own ecommerce platform, called NastyGal (named after a 1975 Betty Davis album). Amoruso gained a cult following on social media and grew her brand.

She is now worth US$280 million and has made Forbes Richest Self-Made Women in America list. At 32, Sophia is one of the youngest (the youngest goes to Taylor Swift).

What can we learn from #GirlBoss?

Love what you do and you’ll never have to work again. This is easier said than done. #GirlBoss starts off with advice on how to find your passion and enhance your natural strengths.

“Figure out what you love doing and don’t suck at, and then try to figure out how to make a living doing that. Don’t be scared. We’re all going to die, it’s just a question of when and where so be brave! You’ll never regret trying to fulfill your dream.”

Feel like your are failing? All that means is that you haven’t found your passion yet. Look at failure differently.

“When your goal is to gain experience, perspective and knowledge, failure is no longer a possibility. Failure is your invention.”

As a #GirlBoss you should save 10% of your income. If you’re tempted to buy shoes then imagine the value of the shoes on your feet.

Don’t worry about everybody else. When a friend copied NastyGal and tried to pass it off as her own, Amoruso turned her attention to making her site better instead of focusing on the negative.

“I also think you can end up ignoring, and even losing, the positive things in your life by focusing too much on the negative. That’s a huge drain, as well as a waste of time. When you think about people, you give them power.”

Doing something that doesn’t pay is just a hobby. So turn your passion(s) into work by combining it with your entrepreneurial skills.

Never sell out. This means sticking to your principles and only working with people who share your vision.

Wear confidence with pride. If you know who you are and what your  business represents, then you’ll be able to handle most situations.
