Who said that E3 2016 had no female roles? I most certainly didn’t because I stayed up till all hours of the morning and actually watched every single media briefing. E3 2016 had some epic games on show, and some great female led titles, which saw some powerful woman take control.
If you missed E3, then here are all the woman who kicked ass at the show this year. Not that is actually matters whether or not the game has female characters in it, because in the end, all that matters is that the game is awesome.
Horizon: Zero Dawn
If you have been hiding under a rock, you would probably not know about Guerrilla Games’ latest and greatest creation. Horizon: Zero Dawn was first announced at E3 2015 and since then the game has been the only thing people are talking about. The game follows the story of Aloy, a female hunter in a world where dinosaur-like robots have taken over the land. Aloy uses her kickass hunting skills to take down these massive creatures by building different types weapons and arrow heads.
1000 years into the future, humanity have left planet Earth due to the takeover by these hostile robotic creatures. Aloy must now lead her tribe to safety by using every resource available to her in this massive open world game.
Watch Dogs 2
Everyone might not see it, but when you enter a co-op game in Watch Dogs 2, each player takes on the role of one of the four hackers in the game. One of these characters is an awesome female hacker who has the best look out of all of them. You know me, give me hot shorts and a hoodie and I am ready to go.
Watch Dogs 2 has a massive co-op component to it where you will be able to play the entire game with up to 4 friends online. This is where the other characters come into play, and we are pretty happy they are not all men.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
The most corrupt video game at E3 2016 was hands down, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, but we loved it. In the latest game you get to create a superhero character, be it female of male, and help fight in the war of the Fractured But Whole.
Cartman has caused drama in the town of South Park by interfering with the way superhero movies are set out. His friends abandon his cause and form their own allegiance of heroes, which includes you and some others. Think of it as Civil War, but only ten thousand times better, and in South Park.
Dishonored 2
The original Dishonored saw us take on the role of Carvo Attano as we crept through the city streets to try take down a mad communist leader. As much as I loved the game and Carvo, Dishonored 2 will be now playable with either two characters, Carvo and Emily Kaldwin. If you remember, Emily is once kidnapped in the original title and Carvo, being her father, saves her.
In Dishonored 2, Emily is now grown up and is ready to take things into her own hands. Emily now bears the Mark of the Outsider, which grants her special abilities like a grapple hook and the ability to spawn turret-like weapons to help take down her enemies. I think the most important thing here is how badass she looks.
Mass Effect Andromeda
Mass Effect 3 was the first time in the series where players could choose to play the game as a female or male, but if the latest Mass Effect Andromeda trailer is anything to go by, we will be taking on the galaxy as a female commander named Ryder.
Mass Effect has always been known for its diverse character system where you could be whoever, and love whoever you wanted to love. The trailer could just be showing us the female version of the main character, but either way, Bioware will make sure we can play as a female, and that is all that matters
LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Who does not love Star Wars? Well, guess what? Star Wars is being Lego-fied and every character in the Force Awakens, including Rey will be playable.
This mean that if you somewhat remotely enjoyed the movie and fell in love with a character, then you will be able to play through the story again, all in Lego glory. Yes, this mean that all the woman of Star Wars will be there too.
ReCore
ReCore is an upcoming Xbox One exclusive game which sees Joule, a female scavenger, take on the wasteland as she tries to find some life in the post-apocalyptic world she now lives in. With the help of her 5 robots, she now sets off to explore the lands to try uncover any life that might still be around.
A deadly threat awaits her as other robots have taken on deadly forms and stand in her way of her objective. She now needs to take things into her own hands and shoot to kill, or just use the awesome robots that she has at her disposal. Do I know if the robots are females? No, please don’t hurt me…
Gears of War 4
I am super excited for Gears of War 4, but only for one reason, Kait Diaz. Voiced by Laura Bailey, Kait will be available at any time during a co-op gameplay session. If you are playing with a friend, then you will be able to choose her as your characters.
Kait is an outsider who has been surviving off the land for years. She is a headstrong female who has some sort of emotional connection to the main protagonist in Gears of War 4, JD. What Kait’s role is in the game and story? We do not know yet, but we do know that she will accompany us through the game whether or not we are playing co-op
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Remastered
I am ready to say goodbye to my life come October 2016 as Bethesda are re-releasing the biggest RPG of the past generation, Skyrim. Like all Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim will see you take on your own personalized character, be it female or male, Khajiit or human. You will then head into the land of Skyrim to do whatever you want to do, which is normally just walk around for hours picking flowers and slaying dragons.
The game will also ship with all its DLC which means you will be able to take on the Dragonborn and even own your own house and decorate it to your liking. Sounds like a great escape from reality to me.
Pokemon Sun and Moon
There is a moment in life when you realize that Pokemon is the most important series, this was this past E3 for me as I watched Nintendo show off the new game. Pokemon Sun and Moon will take us to a whole new area with a brand new selection of Pokemon to catch, collect, and evolve. As all past games, we will be able to play the game as the character we select, be it male or female, Chinese of South African.
The new game is set in the Alola region, which is based off Hawaii. Expect lots of beach sand, volcanic mountains, and palms trees.
