The best alarm clock apps

Waking up early can be tough. My boyfriend gets up at 5am everyday and when I ask how he does it, he says you get used to it. No you don’t. So for people like me who need 3 different alarm clocks to wake up, here are the best alarm clock apps for heavy sleepers. And best of all these are light on data and on your battery.

The Rock Clock

 The Rock Clock™- screenshot

Dwayne The Rock Johnson has released a motivational alarm clock to get you out of bed. I downloaded it over the weekend and set it for 6am. On Sunday morning we were awoken to the sound of The Rock telling us to “get up, get up, get up”. I forgot to set it for weekdays only. It defnitely gets you up.

What makes it different?

  • You can also set it to rock time, and if you follow him on instagram (follow him on instagram), you know that he wakes up just before 4am everyday.
  • The app allows you to set goals.
  • You get a video message from the Rock everyday.

Get it on iOS or Android.

Barcode alarm clock

Set the barcode of a product that you need to scan in order to stop the alarm. I’d suggest setting it as something in another room, which forces you to get out of bed. The alarm won’t stop until you scan the pre progammed item.

What makes it different?

  • You actually have to get out of bed to scan a product. Don’t be that person keeps all the items on their bedside table.
  • You can set the different items and alarms around your morning routine. Bathroom, coffee, check emails.

Get it on iOS. Different app with the same concept on Android.

But first let me take a selfie alarm clock

Snap Me Up: Selfie Alarm Clock- screenshot

Snap me up allows you to set alarm clocks that have to be turned off by taking a selfie. Just watch the camera, open your eyes, snap and get blinded by the flash.

What makes it different?

  • Like looking into a mirror, taking a selfie makes you self conscious. This will definitely wake you up.

Get in on Android.

Rise and shine: the smiling alarm clock

iPhone Screenshot 1

Like snap me up, the selfie alarm clock, Rise & Shine requires that you take a picture of yourself smiling to deactivate it. Flash your pearly whites and save them in your bedhead folder. #IWokeUpLikeThis

What makes it different?

  • You get to start your day off smiling.
  • The app lets you know what times you need to wake up to feel refreshed.

Get it on iOS.

The creepy as hell alarm clock: Carrot

The voice on this app will scare you, but you will laugh out loud at the chores they ask you to complete. The music is also funny and/or annoying.

What makes it different?

  • You need to complete tasks to stop the alarm clock, and they are funny.

Get it on iOS.

I can’t wake up alarm clock

With this alarm clock you will get up on time, thanks to up to 8 different tasks which won’t let you turn the alarm off until you finish them. Scanning a barcode, solving a math problem or answering a trivia question.

What makes it different?

  • The different tasks will ensure that you never get bored.
  • You get to set the level of difficulty which lets you train your brain.

Get it on Android.

The social shaming alarm clock: UHP

I have saved the best for last. While the tracking feature is awesome (You teach UHP the path you walk from your bed to the place you need to be right after you wake up in the morning. The app remembers that path, and the next morning, you have to walk that same path before the alarm will stop), the social shaming is the best and probably most effective alarm clock.

What makes it different?

  • The tracking feature which doesn’t rely on GPS but rather on more technical things like the tilt of your body.
  • The social shaming, which is fully customizable. I would suggest going all tough love on yourself.

Get it on iOS.

THROWBACK Growing up my parents would wake me up for school in the morning. A simpler time when it wasn’t up to me to set an alarm clock. Cell phones weren’t such a big deal back then. When you finally got to the setting your own alarm clock age, most had those massive impossible to set alarm clocks that would usually be flashing red. Who remembers these?
