How many times do you think you check your phone a day?
A. Between 10-30
B. Between 30-60
C. 60 +
D. I have no freaking idea
I had no idea. I couldn’t even guess. That was until I downloaded Checky and decided to try out a little experiment.
What: Checky is an app that tells you how many times a day you check your phone.
Why: Because most of us don’t know. Also this app really made me aware of what was going in my life and the reasons why I was checking my phone so much.
According to this stat, the average person checks their phone 110 times per day with peak hours being between 17.00-20.00. While the total may seem a lot, this works out to checking your phone about 6 times every hour.
If 110 is the norm, then I am well below that. However, I was shocked to see that I check my phone about 45 times a day. This may also be because I only have sound activated for phone calls, every thing else is luck of the draw and depends when I look up to check my phone.
What was I checking? Why would I need to check my phone so often? On the days when I was super busy, my total would only be about 25. This was because I was working and only checked my phone when I woke up and when I went to bed. On the not so busy days or when the internet was slow, this number was much higher.
I decided to set myself a challenge on week 2 of using Checky. I was well aware of how often I checked my phone and decided I was only allowed to check my phone 20 times day. I failed, horribly. Everyday at noon, Checky sends you a note of how many times you checked your phone the previous day.
As soon as I get this notification, I become aware of the number and make an effort to only check my phone when I need to. I am all for technology, especially mobile tech, but sometimes I feel like we become slaves to tech. This app really helped me lessen the time I check my phone and become more mindful of my phone habits.
Awesome: because you become more mindful about your phone habits.
Not so awesome: because you can only see a week’s worth of data.
