At the beginning of 2014 the “experts” touted wearables and phablets as the “things” for 2014. I call BS. 2014 was the year of the selfie. It started with that star studded Oscar picture Ellen grabbed and then it was all downhill from there. While those same experts are going to continue to say things like “it’s all about the wearables in 2014, and phablets and cloud” (seriously guys, same thing, every year?). I predict the selfie is going to continue to flood our Instagram feeds and next year’s big thing will be tech accessories to assist in capturing the perfect selfie. We’ve seen poles, sticks and other clunky items that are already making the rounds. If you’re looking for the perfect selfie taking gadget we suggest the Q-PIC Selfie Shooter from the iStore. It costs R299, connects to your phone via Bluetooth, makes taking selfies a breeze AND fits in your handbag with minimal fuss.
2014 was the year of the selfie and I decided to let our Tech Girls share some of their biggest 2014 selfie moments with you.

My 3 2014 selfie highlights are easy enough. Two involve traveling. I was very blessed this year to head to London for the launch of the LG G3 and San Francisco for the Intel Global Challenge. At both events I got to see and play with innovative technology. I also got to hang out and meet people I now call my closest friends. Two of my selfies highlight those memorable moments.
My third selfie was taken at the top of the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg. It was the first event I attended as a representative of Tech Girl.

2014 was a year filled with wonderful kilometres of running (Paris Marathon, Two Oceans Marathon), travel (Paris, New York, San Francisco and Turkey), family, and a new job. I’ll always remember it (with the help of all my selfies too) for its air miles, new relationships, great family reunions, and my son growing in strides.

I have the best friend in the world, we have known each other for 11 years now and I am so blessed to have such an awesome person in my life. We decided that we were going to dress as bunnies to a party, because we can and all. So one of my favourite 2014 selfies is us dressed as bunnies and looking fab. This year, I had to role-play during a murder mystery weekend away at a cute hotel in Kestell. My biggest dream in life is to act, so this was pretty great. I was a transgender male who was born and raised in Waterval Boven by his 7 sisters – not dramatic at all.
My final 2014 selfie is from the Call of Duty Advanced Warfare launch party hosted by Megarom and Xbox South Africa. It was an awesome evening, we placed third in the championship against other publications. I also won a Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Xbox One Controller for being awesome. I go to so many launches, but this year the Call of Duty launch was the best of the lot.

I’m not really a take-a-selfie kind of person, but if I had to choose my favourite pics from 2014, it would be this pic taken with my BFF at my other BFF’s 30th birthday. We flew down to Cape Town and just let loose. The second is from my trip to the US of A. We were in Chicago doing the tourist thing, so I had to take a picture of my reflection in The Bean. It was amazing spending time with good friends who I hadn’t seen since my Taiwan days about 4 years ago. 2014 was about traveling and friends.

2014 brought a huge change for me – the big haircut. My first selfie is a picture capturing the start of my #ShortHairDontCare phase. My next favourite 2014 selfie was of me with all my girlfriends followed closely by a selfie of me and my cousins first thing in the morning after a sleepover. Grown-ups for who?!

I took this pic with my son just before his first birthday. This birthday marked not only his first year of life but my first year as a mom. I’m sure there will be many, many more selfies we take together as he grows up!

So when our ed came up with this idea and asked us for selfies, I was all ‘where am I going to find selfies for this thing?’. Well, it seems that I’ve got quite a few. When did I become THAT girl? I was one of the first to shun the selfie-taker and now I’ve become one of them. Sigh. In my defence, there are just some moments that can only be captured properly with a selfie. Nonetheless, what a fun trip down memory lane of 2014.
