A few weeks ago a story broke about a giant data leak in South Africa where, literally, millions of South Africans had their personal and private information leaked on the internet. We’re talking ID Numbers, names, gender, ethnicities and even home ownership were shared on the internet. I’m still pretty shocked how few of my friends even knew this had happened and were completely unaware.
The truth is, I would have been none the wiser, but I was on a car launch with one of the HTXT journalists. HTXT shared the story and he was busy discussing the follow up with his team. We happened to be driving together so I obviously heard bits and pieces. I started asking questions. While I wasn’t at liberty to share the information at that point, HTXT followed up with an interview with Troy Hunt, who has a site where you can check if your information has been leaked online.
Troy Hunt’s site Have I been Pwned allows you to input your name or email address to find out if your personal data is available. It is a pretty big eye opener. I inputed two of my email addresses and was informed that my information had been leaked by MySpace a few years back BUT here’s something that surprised me.
Last year May my data was leaked by Zomato! I’ve written a few blog posts about the restaurant review app a few times. I was a fan of it for awhile but haven’t used it in awhile.
Here’s what Hunt’s site shared with me:
What shocked me the most about this is that Zomato did not even send an email to users to tell them their data had been compromised. Not so much as a peep from the app team. Though they’re happy to send weekly emails pushing new advertisers and encouraging you to visit restaurants. I’m actually pretty peeved. However, my personal frustration isn’t the point of this blog post. As I mentioned earlier on, so many of my friends weren’t aware of the data leak that HTXT reported on. Which is scary! I wasn’t even aware that Zomato had leaked my information. None of us can know when our personal information is out there on the internet.
So I wanted to share Hunt’s website with you and encourage you to check it regularly to ensure you details are safe and your information hasn’t been leaked. Remember to keep your information safe and change your passwords regularly! I’m thinking it might help for me to do a little guide on how to protect your data but also what to do when there has been a leak. What do you think? Something you’d want to read?
